What is sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)?
'Sustainable Aviation Fuels' ('SAF') are defined in the as aviation fuels that are either synthetic aviation fuels, biofuels or recycled carbon aviation fuels. SAF produces similar levels of carbon dioxide to conventional aviation fuels when burned, but the carbon dioxide generated is already part of the carbon cycle and is not extracted from the ground specifically for creating aviation fuel. This means that using SAF results in a reduction in emissions compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces over the full lifecycle of the fuel. A major challenges is that SAF availability remains low globally, and accounted for 2.7% of British Airway's total fuel use in 2024. As SAF has a similar chemical composition to traditional fossil jet fuel, it can be dropped straight into existing fuel supply infrastructure and aircrafts without modification. As a result, it is one of the readiest solutions to reduce the emissions associated with aviation. Emission reductions from the use of SAF are measured as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on a lifecycle basis, typically by 80% or more, compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces. Alongside our parent company IAG, who has to date committed $3.5billion to SAF investments and purchases, British Airways sees development and commercial deployment of SAF as crucial to reducing aviation emissions. It is a key part of our plans to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and we have a target of reaching at least 10% SAF use by 2030, in line with the UK government's SAF Mandate.* This includes investing in SAF plants in the UK and US to scale up the availability of SAF. We currently use or plan to use SAF produced from used cooking oil, woody biomass, used tyres, or orchard and forestry waste. We were the first airline in the world to use SAF on a commercial scale in the UK after signing a multi-year agreement with Phillips 66. In 2024, IAG made its largest SAF purchase agreement to date with producer 'Twelve' for the supply of e-SAF, and advanced form of power-to-liquid SAF made from carbon dioxide, water and renewable energy. *The UK SAF mandate requires that 2% of total fossil jet fuel supplied must be SAF in 2025. This will increase annually, reaching 10% in 2030 and 22% by 2040. ReFuelEU Aviation sets requirements for aviation fuel suppliers to gradually increase the share of SAF blended into the conventional aviation fuel supplied at EU airports. This includes a 2% share of SAF in EU airports from 2025, and a 70% share of SAF in all EU airports from 2050.
By purchasing, can I reduce my organisation's Scope 3 emissions footprint?
By purchasing SAF through this platform, your organisation is allocated a specific volume of GHG emissions reductions resulting from SAF use. This can be used to reduce your organisations' Scope 3 emissions footprint that have resulted from flying. A SAF Scope 3 certificate is issued to your organisation upon purchase, detailing the SAF allocated to you.
What certification and verification processes do you provide?
Upon purchase, you are provided with a SAF Scope 3 certificate, detailing the SAF allocated to you. Our SAF meets the sustainability criteria specified under RED II and is free from palm oil, soy beans or derivatives. Clear, audited documentation about feedstock and ownership transfer are provided upon purchase. Our SAF programme uses actual rather than default lifecycle emissions data and our control process is audited externally via the SGS verfification body.
Is there a maximum amount of SAF that my organisation can purchase?
The maximum purchase equates to approx 850 tonnes of CO2e. If you wish to purchase a larger amount of SAF, please contact your British Airways account manager.
Will SAF be used on our actual flights? Where does our money go with our purchase?
Due to the limited amount of SAF available in the market today (SAF makes up less than 1% of global jet fuel), SAF production, distribution, and refueling infrastructure are not yet widespread, and SAF cannot be used on every flight. Because of this, the sector has taken to using a “book and claim” chain of custody model, similar to that of the electricity sector with renewable energy credits. The purchase of these attributes provides a buyer with a claim to the climate benefit associated with a given volume of physical SAF, while simultaneously helping to cover the cost difference between SAF and conventional jet fuels. Through this process, you contribute to demonstrating demand for a more sustainable aviation sector and to helping to lower the current cost barrier of SAF. British Airways will ensure that the SAF is sourced and consumed no later than 12 months after a customer has made a SAF purchase.
